18th Division, including 12th Middlesex of 54 Brigade, arrived in France at end of July, 1915 and after a period of training moved to the Somme area, recently taken over from the French Army. On 22nd November, 1915, 12th Middlesex moved into the front line close to Becourt and Fricourt. One of the dangers ever present in these trenches was that of sniper fire and on 23rd November, a man was shot through the head whilst on look-out duty. The next day, 24th November, 1915, the same thing happened to Private Eyers when he too raised his head above the parapet whilst on look-out duty
